![]() The copper wires are the positive ones on a speaker. In a lighting fixture, the black wire is the positive wire while the white is the negative wire. However, ribbed wires, silver strand wires, or even red colors can also be used for the negative wires. The metal used in these better cables are called OFC (oxygen free copper) or HC-OFC (high conductivity oxygen free copper). Conventionally, positive wires are labeled red while negative wires are black. Copper oxide is a semi-conductor which distorts, resists and eventually blocks the electrical signal. This reduced oxygen cable is more stable over time because with less oxygen – it is inherently resistant to corrosion (becoming oxidized – and turning bright orange and eventually green). The more quality in-wall speaker cables utilize higher purity coppers coppers which are contaminated with fewer other metals and made with a process that reduces the amount of oxygen that is present in the molten metal. It’s typically better than doorbell wire, but there is still better wire out there. This is also the type of copper that inexpensive inwall speaker cables use. Most “emergency cables” that are provided free with inexpensive equipment use this type of copper. An amp that continues to run without problem after being wired up improperly. Because that sounds almost as appealing as dirt – most companies that use it call it something like high purity copper. Red should always go to positive, and black or white should always go to negative. The next level is referred to in the industry as tough-pitch copper. It’s great for door bells, but not good enough for audio reproduction. Other in-wall cables, such as doorbell wire and electrical wire (Romex) are made with electrical grade wire. ![]() ![]() This guide is perfect when you are installing a new Sierra radio into your GMC truck.
